DJ RJ's ModCast

An hour of my week — in song.

If you missed me this month, I apologise. I seriously contemplated putting together a Valentine’s Day music cast, but most of this month, I’ve been struggling with allergies and other tasty shit, and while I did manage to get myself out of the apartment for Saturday, 13 February for Bloody Valentine’s Day at The Elbow Room, I wound up leaving earlier than my friends because even though it’s my apartment that I’m allergic to (or more accurately, something *in* said — I have tests coming up to determine what, but I’ve still made better cleaning efforts in the meantime), allergies can be exhausting.

This week, I start on a quirky downbeat and then immediately switch tones with some upbeat poppy stuff, because I’ve discovered that while I’m feeling like absolute hell, perky upbeat music actually has a sort of placebo effect on my mood. It doesn’t make everything completely better, but it helps some and I’m able to get things done.

[2010-01-25] Oooh sha la la la ooh…

Posted by DJ RJ under Music Casts

There is a very good reason that I haven’t uploading anything in a few weeks, and why this week’s cast may be best described as… well, “not Mod”. A very good reason, but not one I’m going to extrapolate on here because, frankly, if you don’t know, you don’t need to know. But it makes me feel better, and only four or five people seem to listen to this with any sort of regularity, it seems — and “five” is me being an egotist.

Think about it though: what could be more Modern than electronic music?

[2009-12-28] A Taste of Garage

Posted by DJ RJ under Music Casts, Uncategorized

I’ve been shaking a cold and too congested to even think until earlier today. OK, I may have been coherent enough to draw penises, but if you’re a personal friend of mine, that makes total sense to you.

Hre’s this week’s set list, and tomorrow, i am heading down to Direct Hits for New Year’s Eve — where I will not be DJin or selling top-quality crap, but will instead be drinking of top-quality booze and wondering why more Mod men don’t at least admit that they’re bisexual (as I am often fated to wonder; but hey, it’s better than going to the “gay night” and being hit on by lesbians and The Straight Guy Hunting Down a “Cute Lesbian” for his “Curious” Girlfriend).

As much as it shames me to admit this, there isn’t really any excuse for this to be as late as it is, but it is. There are a few reasons I could use, but honestly, it just feels like a cop-out, as perfectly valid as those reasons appear on paper, were they to come from another.

I decided to do something different withthis one, and so it’s all instrumentals and minimal-voice pieces.

Also, I have no excuse for uploading 30 November’s cast again last week. I just fixed that.

To both listeners, if you’re hoping for Christmas music, I’m going to put that off until December 21 — in theory, I could do a new cast of Christmas music every week, and have it all different, but I want to save stuff for next year.

As for this week’s set, I know I don’t like to do any one band two weeks in a row, and i think I did that last week, too, but sometimes a set works best with a specific song or two, and it cannot be helped.

Well, monkeys (all three of you listening to this), I’ve got a new computer finally settled in, and so the Modcast is back, and to commerate this fact — and the fact that I’m now updating this on Mondays — I’ve made today’s cast a theme!  Whoo!

Yes, I’ve thrown mood and beatmatching out the window (and I say this as if I ever gave a shit before), to play some of my favourite spooky Mod (and Mod Friendly) songs and Goth covers of Mod (and Mod-friendly) songs, and a few punk covers thrown in, (cos I don’t even give a shit about the theme here) and whatever the hell Shakespeare’s Sister and Strawberry Switchblade are (cos I bloody well felt like it), cos damnit, I have all this music, and you’re just as bored as I am, so you’re going to give it a listen now, aren’t you?  Aren’t you?

Shakespeare’s Sister – “Black Sky”
Velvet Underground – “Beginning to See the Light”
Nico – “Roses In the Snow”
The Fall – “Mod Mock Goth”
Slade – “Raven”
Strawberry Switchblade – “Ecstasy (Apple of My Eye)”
The Zombies – “Time Of the Season”
Christine Pilzer – “Dracula”
The Vampires – “My Girl”
Sisters of Mercy – “1969″
Gina X Performance – “Harley Davidson”
Siouxie & the Banshees – “This Wheel’s On Fire”
Bauhaus – “Telegram Sam”
Patti Smith – “My Generation”
Jayne County – “Come On Down to My Boat Baby”
Nashville Pussy – “First I Look At the Purse”
Lydia Lunch & Rowland S Howard – “Some Velvet Morning”
The Who – “Boris the Spider”

And before the off-chance that anybody comments, YES, I realise that I don’t have “Paint It Black” on there, because I only have it on vinyl, I am not wheeling my record player into my studio, slsk is not cooperating, and I’m impatient — so there you go.

Modcast for 2008-10-25

Posted by DJ RJ under DJ RJ accouncements, Music Casts

Yes, a new cast!  No, I still have more Direct Hits sets to load, but crap, I’ve waited three weeks.  I suppose that I owe both listeners an explanation:

I have medical issues. I have been taking care of these. I also have a band; actually, I have several music projects, but this is my “real band” I’m talking about. As a band member, I have band practise. I also have many other projects that I juggle around, including a novel that needs to be wrapped up and I’ve found myself taking on a regular blog project and I am just bad at budgeting my time. Really bad. Heinously bad. Still, with practise, I will get better.

So, here’s a new 45-minute set, and on Wednesday, I will load more from my Direct Hits archives. I promise. It will be awesome.

The Tape-beatles – Individual Choice
Tiny Tim – The Coming Home Party
Blue Rondo a’la Turk – Change
Gloria Jones – Finders Keepers
The Monochrome Set – Expresso
Nouvelle Vague – Dance With Me
R. Dean Taylor – Back Street
The Fall – Gotta See Jane
France Gall - Jazz A-Go-Go
QYPTHONE - Go-Go Girl
Les Fleur de Lys – One City Girl
The Rolling Stones – Let’s Spend the Night Together
The Small Faces – What’cha Gonna Do About It
The Libertines – Can’t Stand Me Now
Mae West – Light My Fire

I really don’t want to upload this as it is, but I cheated both listeners out on a Wednesday cast last week, and I don’t want to pull that shit again this week.

Now, not all of my stuff on LP is backed-up / duplicated on mp3 — in fact, most of it is not. Hell, most of my CD’s aren’t simply because I don’t have the space. Four songs from my June 10th, 2008 set at Direct Hits are songs I currently have on vinyl only — in fact, three of them, I thought I had on mp3, but it turned out that I didn’t, and the only reason I didn’t just download them is because I had a huge crisis last night that was more important than hunting down four songs on slsk.

(v) ≠ “vagina”; (v) = song I currently only have on vinyl
(r) = request

The Spiders – Why Don’t you Love Me?*
The Bureau – Only For Sheep
(v) Tina Turner – The Acid Queen
(v) The Rolling Stones – Route 66
Makin’ Time – Two Coins For the Ferryman
(r) Gloria Jones – Tainted Love
Jacques Dutronc – Et Moi, Et Moi, Et Moi
Twiggy – When I Think of You
Nino Ferrer – Alexandre
Les Cappuccino – les Filles Madison
Sharon Tandy – Daughter of the Sun
Dexys Midnight Runners – Breakin’ Down the Walls of Heartache
Eleanor Rigby – I Want to Sleep With You
(v) The Kinks – Well-Respected Man
Mod Fun – 99th Floor
(v)David Bowie – Ching-A-Ling
Brian Auger & Julie Driscoll – Wheel’s On Fire
Arthur Brown – Fire

*U$ group, not the Japanese group

ModCast Archive: 2006-07-24

Posted by DJ RJ under Music Casts

OK, I know I promised something both yesterday and today, but in all seriousness, yesterday and today was filled up with me doing shit for my band — my actual band, the one I sing for. In fact, until my guitarist got here earlier today for practise, I thought it was still Wednesday.

Now, it turns out that I never actually cast this old archive, I just had the set-list jotted down and I came across it by accident. Yes, I suppose that in theory I could just go get my Direct Hits setlists from this summer and just arrange the music on here, but that would involve transcribing hand-written sets, and this shit is just C&P. I will resume my “twice-weekly until it’s all my archives and old sets are posted” schedule next week, when I pick up after the lag from my guitarist getting into the swing of things at uni.

The Olympians – Hopeless Endless Ways
The New Hearts – Another Teenage Anthem
The Purple Hearts (60’s, Australian) – Of Hopes & Dreams & Tombstones
The Damned – Morning Bird
Nino Ferrer – Mirza
The Loons – Stumble & Fall
The Ordinary Boys – Boys Will Be Boys
Nine Below Zero – Eleven Plus Eleven
Makin’ Time – Pump It Up
Franz Ferdinand – Get Up and Use Me
Rip Rig & Panic – Eros, What Brings Colour Up the Stem
Les Cappuccino – Green Onions
John’s Children – Just What You Want, Just What You’ll Get
Jacques Brel – Jacky
